Conservatism, Politicking and Sweet, Sweet Tea.

"We are on strike, we the men of the mind. We are on strike against self-immolation. We are on strike against the creed of unearned rewards and unrewarded duties."-John Galt "Atlas Shrugged"

Sometime last year I decided I had had enough. I decided it was time to get involved, no longer sitting on the sidelines letting politics happen to me. So Friday, among the zillions of other small things I am doing to be more productive in politics, I had the opportunity to participate in a real live protest. Like thousands of others-maybe as many as 30,000 people in 50+ cities-I participated on February 27th in a "Chicago Tea Party" Rally. Locally, at our St. Louis rally it is estimated we had over 1,000 folks show up to express our displeasure with the ridiculous pork and taxation that is coming our way from Capitol Hill. I volunteered my time to assist in the implementation, shouted and cheered during the speeches and did what I could to once more to further and promote conservative ideals.

We did, of course, have a message that we were promoting as a whole over all-repeal the pork or we'll repeal you-something like that, which I can definitely support. Media was everywhere; the coverage was really good and in the end, mostly balanced. The organizers and we volunteers could not have been happier to see conservatives come together for a common purpose and message. It's about time. It was enough to almost make me tear up a little. Cool enough, we're even planning our next event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=66989849578#/event.php?eid=66989849578

So what is my personal motivation? We all have a global message which the Tea Party is promoting, we're there because we agree that government and spending are out of control and our politicians are not listening to us-but I would say everyone also has a personal reason for showing up; for having passion about this issue. Mine are many, but here are just a few:

Personal Responsibility-I believe every person is responsible for their own actions. I believe your life is what you make of it. I believe no one can pull you up or make you better-you have to do it for yourself. I believe the government LEAST OF ALL can do one thing to make you a better person or somehow enrich your life. I am sick of the notion that people are "entitled" to anything simply because they were born. The only thing we are born entitled to is fair opportunity.

Fiscal Responsibility- My mom always taught me: Do the thing that will have the most impact while doing the least harm, in times of crisis. Just because America has a headache, does not mean, as a whole, we should be getting a lobotomy. It is insulting and maddening that Obama has forgotten there is a lot of gray between the black and white of action and inaction. (If you want to take that as a racial slight of some kind-go ahead-it wasn't, but some would be determined to make it so.)There were hundreds of other approaches that could have been taken that would have actually helped people who need help and given stimulation to the economy. Sadly, we must also realize sometimes you gotta suck it up. Some parts of this recession just need to happen. Some things will be painful and some people will be affected. THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. As I have said before-it is quite presumptuous to think Obama has some magical power to stop a tornado. Rather than trying to stop it, we should be looking forward to how we will move on from it.

Political Responsibility-Every day I am more concerned with the direction of our country. I grow tired of RINO's and those in the party who are not conservative LEADERS, but only a mouthpiece. I am weary of Republicans who reach across the aisle so far they are in danger of spontaneously combusting into Democrats. When bipartisanship means Republicans will rubber stamp every bill or policy the Obama Administration puts in front of you-I want you OUT. When you say we should accept less just to get along-YOU are excused from participating. Dear leaders, if you are not going to vote ALWAYS in the interest of conservative values and principles then PLEASE LEAVE THE PARTY-I AM DONE WITH YOU. Oh, and just so we're clear-I don't really care who you are. I have never been one to go along just to get along. It's not my style and if it's yours….well you see where I'm going.

I tell my children all the time if you do not like something you must take action to change it. If you aren't going to take any action, then you have absolutely no right to whine when you don't like the results. Well folks-I am taking action. It's time our Republican politicians actually lead and bring back the conservatism this country so desperately needs.

Politicians have never shown me the value behind being and living conservatively-my family, my friends, the people I associate with and my pride showed me that.
