Judge Walker tells voters "No one gives a shit what you want"

Judge Walker today struck down a ban on gay marriage voted on and approved by more than 50% of the people of California.

A federal judge in California ruled today that the state's same-sex marriage ban amounts to unconstitutional discrimination and should be immediately struck down. But U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker issued a stay on the order as supporters of the measure seek an appeal.
Many speculate that the case will eventually reach the Supreme Court.

"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license," wrote Walker in a 136-page decision. "Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples."

At issue in the California case is a controversial ballot measure known as Proposition 8 that was launched in response to a state supreme court decision allowing gays and lesbians to wed. Prop 8 passed with 52 percent of the vote in November 2008.

Absolutely abhorrent. The people voted and the measure passed.
